A man, 76, is dead after being struck by a pickup truck on Highway 102 in Stewiacke on Thursday night.One person is dead after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 102 in Alton, near Stewiacke, on Thursday night.Cpl. Chris Marshall said RCMP were on the scene of a deer-vehicle collision in the northbound lane that occurred at 9:25 p.m. The SUV was pulled onto the shoulder of the road and the deer had been removed.
“There was no debris in the road, the officers were just sitting with the occupants of the SUV waiting for a tow," Marshall said. A pickup truck stopped along the southbound lanes and the driver got out to see if he could help, Marshall said. The man walked across the southbound lanes and the median, then into the northbound lanes when he was struck by a passing pickup truck.
“Members on scene called for an ambulance and started first-aid, but unfortunately he could not be revived,” Marshall said.“For anyone who was there and who would have seen it happen, it was , Marshall said. He said counselling and support services would be offered to members and the people who were at the scene.Traffic was diverted onto Highway 2 while an accident reconstructionist worked at the scene. The highway reopened shortly after 3 a.m.
