An easy method that requires just two common kitchen items can help ensure we can still enjoy our bread even after it has started to go past its best

While we're all used to keeping an eye on our groceries' use-by dates, it can often feel like a losing battle trying to ensure food is eaten before the telltale signs appear that it’s gone past its best.

When it comes to bread in particular, we often find ourselves throwing loaves away almost as soon as we’ve brought them home from the supermarket . Nevertheless, in a clip shared on YouTube by BuzzFeed, a simple technique was revealed to help ensure we can still enjoy our bread even after it has started to go stale. Requiring only two everyday kitchen essentials, the first step involves moistening a paper towel. BuzzFeed then recommends gently wrapping each slice of stale bread in the damp towel before moving on to the next step. For the following stage, they suggest placing one slice of bread in the microwave at a time and heating it on the highest setting for 15 seconds. Once complete, the bread should look and feel much like it did when you first bought it — soft, warm, and ready to eat again. They also revealed that the same technique can be used to revive other baked goods, including bagels, donuts, and muffins. However, this isn’t the only method that can rescue stale bread. TheKitchn.com recently shared their “go-to method” for saving a loaf, recommending that you lightly dampen it before placing it in an oven preheated to 450°F. Explaining their results, they wrote: “The exterior is crusty with a slight sheen, and the interior is warm and fluffy, ready for whatever you want to spread on it. You don’t need to use aluminum foil, and the 10-minute timing is pretty hard to beat.” This method works by reintroducing moisture to the inside of the loaf while the heat from the oven restores a satisfyingly crisp crust. TheKitchn.com also noted other approaches, such as spraying the bread with water and wrapping it in tin foil. Meanwhile the Daily Express previously reported that keeping bread next to one particular vegetable could help extend its shelf life by up to a week. A spokesperson for waste management experts Wheeldon Brothers explained: “Celery gives off moisture, which helps prevent the bread from drying out without encouraging mould.” They added: “It’s a clever way to maintain the softness of bread while storing it in the fridge.”
