It’s fitting that a region called the Badlands where fearsome dinosaurs once roared has become the de facto home of Western Canada’s extreme music festival.
Loud As Hell, a decibel-breaking metal fest, is marking its 10th anniversary in Drumheller with this long weekend’s event. With the exception of 2020, due to the pandemic, the fest has descended on the rural town 1.5 hours northeast of Calgary every year since 2012. The Dinosaur Downs Stampede Grounds south of town will once again be set up July 29-31 with a mainstage, vendor booths, music clinics, and even freak shows and burlesque dancers.
This is happening on the August Long Weekend again, so we encourage everyone to camp and probably consider booking Tuesday off to recover your ears, livers and lungs. We’ve got our best lineup yet, ready to melt your face.”Article content But while Drumheller is a bit remote, the festival has garnered a lot of attention in the metal music world. It’s become a pilgrimage of sorts for metalheads looking to rock out to Canadian and international metal bands such as Goatwhore, Honour Bound, Divinity, Battlecross, Striker and Anciients. Last year’s show even featured aInto Eternity with former vocalist Stu Block along with Planet Eater and Arrival of Autumn .
This weekend’s show promises another solid lineup of 45 bands including Vancouver’s AngelMaker, Neck of the Woods, aEndast along with a rare appearance from Calgary’s prog squad Divinity for the Saturday moshpit. Festival promoter Jon Asher says Friday’s opening night will showcase the “will set off the debauchery of extreme proportions.”
Things get underway Thursday night with a festival kickoff show at Neighbours’ Corner Pub, 190 Railway Ave. West.or on-site.
