How three Calgary actors went from complete unknowns to walking the red carpets of Venice, Toronto and New York for acclaimed The Maiden
The Maiden, which opens in theatres on Friday, follows Kyle and Colton on a seemingly carefree day as they explore both a strangely nascent suburban sprawl and the weedy wilderness of a ravine below a graffiti-scarred bridge. When Kyle is killed by a passing train, the film becomes a melancholy but moving exploration of grief, friendship and alienation.
While Foy’s skills are impressive, The Maiden is also undeniably anchored by the remarkable performances of the three leads. Foy was so taken by his cast that he threw out much of the scripted dialogue and gave them space to develop characters using their own speech patterns and mannerisms. Ness was 15 when she first tried out for the part, the first of five auditions. She turned 17 while making the film.
Nor had he anticipated the surreal journey that would follow after being plucked from obscurity. The three travelled to the Venice Film Festival in the summer of 2022, where The Maiden premiered and picked up the Cinema of the Future award. They attended the Toronto International Film Festival and the recent screening at MOMA in New York. They also walked the red carpet when it had its Alberta debut at the Calgary International Film Festival.
“I had never acted, was never in a drama class, never in any way would pursue anything like this,” he says. “So I was crazy surprised just being asked to do something and then the film winds up in Italy. How cool is that? That was the most surprising, mind-altering part.”So far, the three stars of The Maiden have not acted in any other projects, although all three seem open to the idea.
