says over the phone during a recent stroll through Central Park. “Sometimes I’ll cover my right eye, and they’ll immediately know.” To those familiar with Hulu’sthe actor plays Janine, the outspoken if endearing woman who loses an eye as punishment early in the first season. “Eyes, especially as an actor in film and TV, are so important. You watch—she can convey an entire monologue with a blink,” says Brewer, calling it an acting exercise to perform without one’s full face.

Hollywood personalities expressing their personal values off-screen is increasingly the norm. It’s also in line with Dior creative directorCara Delevingnecast members, Brewer included, even mounted a campaign in support of Planned Parenthood, as a wave of abortion restrictions spread across state legislatures. “Some people choose not to watch the news or to read the newspaper or whatever, and it feels like this responsibility to show people this is happening,” the actor says.

If there’s wisdom embedded in the show itself, Brewer has also found it within her own character. “She has forced me to look at myself more deeply, more intimately, with much more curiosity—because if I’m going to be curious about her, I have to be curious about myself,” Brewer says. “What I admire about Janine, though, is she’s much more of a rebel than I am, in every way.” The actor rattles off the lessons she’s gleaned by example—about courage and autonomy, friendship and loyalty.
