Cystic Fibrosis is an aggressive genetic disease that inhibits lung function, requiring the body to work overtime to fight off infections, clear airways, and maintain a healthy weight. It affects 30,000 people in the country today, with thousands of new cases diagnosed every year.
In the past, CF patients often did not live long enough to attend elementary school, though now with medication and therapy, they can live well into their 50s and 60s.In best-case scenarios, patients can function normally day to day, even play sports, with some assistance from inhalers and nebulizers to help clear the lungs. In more severe cases of reduced lung function, some may require full lung transplants.
