Made-in-Alberta pension plan isn't catching fire with voters: poll abvotes abpoli
After becoming premier, UCP Leader Danielle Smith had Finance Minister Travis Toews look into pulling out of the Canada Pension Plan in favour of a provincial plan, but the idea has little public support, according to a Leger poll for Postmedia.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
“This is not an easy win for anyone trying to push it. If it’s put to a plebiscite right now, it looks like Albertans would vote it down,” said Trevor Harrison, a professor of sociology at the University of Lethbridge. “They just don’t want to lose it. I mean, this is a really safe investment, versus what is presumably not as safe.”
One of the big issues is the vagueness of what a provincial plan would look like. More people said they did not know where they stood on the topic, 25 per cent, than said they supported it. Overall, 54 per cent said they did not support leaving CPP for a provincial plan. “A quarter of the population is unsure, and given some of the complexities with just pension plans and people’s level of understanding of how things work, I’m not surprised,” said Andrew Enns, executive vice-president of Leger. “I’m not surprised that there’s a large portion of the population that would not be supportive of the move.
