Memorials honoring the 21 Robb Elementary School shooting victims are growing in Uvalde, Texas. Behind two of them are mothers.

A mother of four children and grandmother of three, Morales says she felt an intense need to do something to show love and support for the families, friends and loved ones of those who perished.

Lydia, who helped her mother carefully tape the names to the chairs, also works at her mom’s daycare. She found out her 3rd grade teacher,“I found out my teacher was sacrificing her life for all these kids,” Lydia told TODAY Parents. “Jut hearing that they shot up a school ... how could he do that? How could he do that to innocent children? It’s taking a toll on the community.

“It was total chaos for me,” she said. “I couldn’t leave my children that I had at the daycare to be with my own daughter, so I was just hoping that whoever was in charge of her at that time would do whatever they could to protect her.”“My husband was ex-military, and we moved all around the world,” Morales explained. “But I moved back to Uvalde to give our kids a better life — to be safe.

On Thursday afternoon, she went to Home Depot and bought the necessary items to create 21 wooden crosses. For four hours, she assembled the crosses herself, painting them white and driving them to Uvalde. As she began to set them up on the side of the road, strangers stopped and helped properly stake the crosses into the ground.

“This is the peaceful side of me,” she said. “The angry side of me is mad as hell. Those Texas leaders? Those political leaders? You deal with what those families have to deal with — you see it. You live with it for the rest of your life... but they don’t.”Makeshift memorials have taken the place of Memorial Day decorations and signs congratulating students from graduating high school in Uvalde.
