The fog now hanging over the country on the question of Chinese election meddling demands total clarity.
That’s if the bombshell report is true. It might not be. The story in question is pegged on two anonymous security sources, and while the news organization which aired it will have lawyered the piece, errors have been made in the past, as Ottawa’scould tell you. If the intelligence was garbage going into the newsroom it will be garbage going out in the report and this is no time, and no file, for sloppy work.
All of the online argy-bargy is a reminder the Chinese don’t actually need a result with their interference — e.g. the actual flipping of seats from one party to another — they just need a process with which to interfere. Like the Russian saboteurs who sowed the seeds of division on platforms such as Facebook in the run-up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, chaos is the whole point. The flowers don’t ever have to bloom.
If you’re keeping score at home, this means: The Chinese got a result whenever they set whatever plots they had in 2019 and 2021 in motion; they’re getting a result as they watch us tear ourselves apart as we discover their plots; and they’ll get another result when whatever investigation is held into these plots uncovers. For the Chinese, it’s win-win-win.
So, why isn’t he? And just why did he expend so much capital trying to keep his chief of staff away from the parliamentary committees looking into these matters?
