No threat to B.C. as officials across the continent's West Coast are monitoring the effects of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit off the coast of northern California.Posted: Dec 05, 2024 2:54 PM EST | Last Updated: 10 minutes ago
According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the quake, initially measured at magnitude 7.3 but later revised down, struck 72 kilometres southwest of Eureka, Calif., at a depth of 12 kilometres. The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. PT west of Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County near the Oregon border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .
More than 1.3 million people lived close enough to the quake that they could have felt it, the USGS estimated.
