M23 rebels are making significant strides towards Goma, a major city in eastern Congo, prompting widespread panic and displacement. The rebels are battling the Congolese army, with reports of bomb blasts and hundreds of wounded civilians seeking treatment in Goma. The situation is raising international concerns, with accusations of Rwandan support for the M23 and the potential for a wider conflict.
A pick up truck of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo patrols in Goma , on Jan. 23.Panic spread in Goma on Thursday, with M23 rebels steadily inching closer to the city in eastern Congo as they battle the Congo lese army. Bombs were heard going off in the distant outskirts and hundreds of wounded civilians were brought in to the main hospital from nearby towns and villages.
More than 7 million people have been displaced by the fighting. Earlier this month, M23 captured the towns of Minova, Katale and Masisi, west of Goma. Rwanda’s government denies the claim but last year admitted that it has troops and missile systems in eastern Congo to safeguard its security, pointing to a buildup of Congolese forces near the border. U.N. experts estimate there are up to 4,000 Rwandan forces in Congo.
The situation in Sake remains unclear, with some residents claiming that the rebels have entered and seized the town.
