Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan pays tribute to frequent collaborator Bruce Willis by sharing a touching behind-the-scenes story.
Acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan recalled a touching behind-the-scenes story from the set of The Sixth Sense involving infamous Hollywood actor and frequent collaborator Bruce Willis. The iconic 1999 horror was the first instance of the actor-director duo working together, and they have since collaborated on Unbreakable and Glass. Willis was tragically diagnosed with aphasia, a condition affecting language cognition, and it was announced in March 2022 that he would be retiring from acting.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During an interview as part of the press tour for the upcoming final season of Shyamalan's critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series Servant, he was questioned by Jake's Takes about his collaborations with Willis and his legacy as an actor.
He is this blue collar hero that I grew up with, and not just for me but for Quentin [Tarantino] and Wes [Anderson], and you name it, Fifth Element. Every time, he took risks and just jumped in, and when he believed in you, he was just behind you, and would be the muscle behind you to go ‘Hey, go for it.’ On Sixth Sense on the first Friday, they said ‘Bruce Willis wants to talk to you in his trailer,’ I was like ‘Oh my God!’ I was twenty-whatever and I was like ‘Oh no. He’s gonna yell at me.
Unbreakable is the first film in Shyamalan's only trilogy to date, the second of which wouldn't be made for another 16 years. Willis leads again, this time as the sole survivor of a tragic train crash, David Dunn. Playing opposite Pulp Fiction co-star Samuel L. Jackson, the film is a reflection of comic books, positioning Willis as a 'superhero' whose bones cannot be broken.
The final film of the Unbreakable trilogy was 2019's Glass, which tied together the 2000 film and 2016's Split, featuring James McAvoy, who plays a character diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. In his second outing as a superhero, Willis reprised his role as Dunn, though Glass bears little resemblance to the MCU or any other modern superhero flicks.
