Here are five things we must do now to protect public figures and others.

As the threat to Freeland highlighted, Canada is not immune. In 2021 and 2022, angry crowds have forced the cancellation of several events with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. There have been threats against judges in the trucker convoy cases. In 2020, an armed man rammed his truck into a gate a Rideau Hall, threatening harm to the prime minister. In 2019, a vulgar slur was painted on the constituency office of then-cabinet minister Catherine McKenna.

, we need legislation to protect Canadians from online harms. The federal government has promised to do this — something we applaud. Hate speech — spread and amplified on social media platforms — must end. Platforms and other online services must be held accountable for the content they host, just as traditional media are.Article content, we need greater investment in threat detection and better inter- and intra-agency communication between law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The frequency and severity of online vitriol is on the rise, and it is no longer trickling into the real world; it is flooding into it. It is time to act. As we learned again on Jan. 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol and during the occupation of Ottawa in January-February of this year, democracy is not only precious; it is fragile. Let’s not take it for granted.Share this article in your social network
