The sinkhole, which was first detected on July 30 near the Alcaparrosa mine, remains stable, company spokesman Mark Turner said, and hasn’t affected the company’s workers or infrastructure. It isn’t likely to affect the company’s production either.
He added that Lundin was “conducting a technical analysis and gathering information to determine the cause of the event.”Chile’s National Service of Geology and Mining sent a specialist to the area on Aug. 1 to assess the situation and make recommendations, it said in a statement on Twitter. “There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters , to the bottom,” the agency’s director, David Montenegro, said in a statement, according to Reuters. “We haven’t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water.”Article content
The sinkhole developed near Lundin’s Ojos del Salado operation is situated in Chile’s Atacama Region, 20 kilometres south of the city of Copiapó. The operation contains two underground mines, Santos and Alcaparrosa and is part of Lundin’s Candelaria mining complex, in which it has an 80 per cent claim.
