“Lumière started as an Art-at-Night event inspired by Nuit Blanche, an arts festival that began in Paris before moving to Toronto and other city centres around the world. When our friends in Halifax started the Nocturne Festival and we saw its success, it was decided that it would be a great idea to try to bring it to our community.
“We have a lot of folks from other Maritime provinces that we’re connected with through the festival scene and who are part of the Atlantic Art-at-Night Festivals Alliance. We do artist swaps with other festivals in Atlantic Canada, and we’ve noticed that a lot of folks will travel around to all the different festivals, so we are bringing in more tourists from outside of Cape Breton,” Neal says.
“I grew up in Sydney, so Lumière has always been an exciting event to attend, and it just felt like the right fit for me,” says Blanchard who works primarily in drawing and mixed media. “It’s a privilege to be able to have the time to put towards it.” Her project will also include information she collected anonymously through online questionnaires about worries and other emotions people have experienced over the past couple of years. She compiled that information into an interactive part of the exhibit that she hopes will resonate with viewers on a personal level.
