Following the announcement of Star Wars: New Jedi Order and Rey’s return, some fans are taking to social media to express their frustration.
The announcement of Star Wars: New Jedi Order isn't sitting well with all fans, some of whom are not happy about the further exploration of Luke Skywalker's controversial sequel trilogy arc. After first being introduced in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley's Rey would return in Rian Johnson's divisive 2017 sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, before 2019's disappointing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from J.J. Abrams seemingly concluded her story.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 that Star Wars: New Jedi Order will continue Rey's story as she rebuilds the Jedi Order. Despite clearly representing an attempt to right the wrongs of Rey's ending in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, some fans have taken to Twitter to express their frustration at how the announced film will further solidify Luke's divisive legacy.
Although some argued that Star Wars: The Last Jedi's treatment of Luke made the Jedi Master a more complex, flawed, and therefore more interesting character, others, including Hamill himself, took issue with some of Johnson's choices. Luke, it was argued, wouldn't have given up after his failures and relegated himself to exile.
There's no right answer when it comes to the sequel trilogy's depiction of Luke, but Star Wars: New Jedi Order can actually be a bright spot in Star Wars' future. Rey is very much a product of Luke's teachings and wouldn't have been able to defeat Palpatine without him, and her decision to rebuild the Jedi Order means Luke's legacy won't be one of failure but one of hope and success.
