I liked Hulu's new TV series, inspired by the hit movie 'Love, Simon,' but that ending…
In Victor’s case, he comes from a financially tight, traditionally Catholic family; he has more obstacles to climb and, because of this, is instantly more relatable than Simon., too. Victor—transplanted from Texas to Simon’s high school in Atlanta—feels unsure about his sexuality and starts dating Mia, the coolest girl in school, upping his social status in the process. But then he meets and starts working with Benji , an openly gay student with a boyfriend.
His inner turmoil over this is palpable and will resonate with anyone who’s had to come out. I certainly identified with it. I remember what it was like to be 16, confused, and closeted. It’s a feeling I never want to experience again and, thankfully, shows likeEric McCandless/Hulu But here’s the thing: Even though I know what it’s like to be Victor, I still found myself banging my head at some of his choices—mostly as they pertained to Mia, who deserves the world. Instead of being celebrated in her full complexity, she is, in many ways, collateral damage to Victor’s all-consuming journey of self-discovery. She’s completely head over heels for Victor, but he’s just stringing her along.
I understand that coming out is an extremely difficult experience—believe me, I did it in the South—but to show it unfold at the expense of someone as good and caring as Mia feels cruel. No matter how difficult Victor’s journey is, he’s still a human being dating another human being . And that other human being deserved way more respect than what Victor gives her by the end.. Without giving too much away, Victor’s secret explodes in a way that'’ both understandable and infuriating.
But damn it, I’m a greedy viewer. I want to see how Victor’s parents and sister react! As the show has progressed, we’ve witnessed Victor’s father’s homophobia begin to thaw. All his nuanced character development was, presumably, building up to Victor’s coming-out scene—which unfolds with no resolution. I won’t lie, I was frustrated by this evenmove mountains? No, probably not.
