'Love Island' is arguably more famous for turning contestants into fast fashion influencers than helping them find love. A new sponsor in Ebay is hoping to bring sustainable fashion to the forefront.
contestants will be encouraged to wear their own new and pre-loved clothes, mixed with items from a shared wardrobe of second-hand fashion from Ebay.has a history of driving fast fashion sales, with many contestants going on to sign brand deals, design or edit their own collections, and become fashion influencers.
“Before I entered the villa, I was offered £500 to spend with the show’s sponsor,” he says. “Once I was inside, I was delivered duffel bags full of free clothes every three or four days, which I also declined. It was mind blowing to see so many clothes worn once and then discarded. The show is symbiotic with fast fashion.”
The islanders’ shared pre-loved wardrobe will be curated by celebrity stylist Amy Bannerman, whose clients include singer Dua Lipa, actress Sophie Turner and hairdresser and television host Jonathan Van Ness. New research from Ebay reveals 20 per cent of UK consumers buy more second-hand clothing now than they did two years ago, and 16 per cent of their wardrobes are now second-hand.
This would be a prime opportunity to air conversations about sustainable fashion on the show and encourage contestants to repeat outfits, continues Staniland. “I would love to see more sustainably minded contestants on the show to take this progress further. Maybe the winner will become a brand ambassador for Ebay instead of Boohoo.”
