Bianca Beemer's belongings went missing during a multi-flight journey from Toronto to Berlin, leaving her without essential items and struggling to adjust to her new home.
Five months after moving from Toronto to Berlin , Bianca Beemer is still without the bulk of her belongings. Her luggage, containing decades of valuables worth at least $10,000, went missing during a multi-flight journey. Beemer meticulously packed her life into three bags: a carry-on, a suitcase, and an Ontario Reign branded hockey bag. This bag, weighing approximately 75 pounds, was checked in at Toronto Pearson International Airport due to its size.
Beemer claims she encountered unusual requests for cash payment at the oversized baggage check-in, ultimately paying almost $400. Her flights with Condor to Frankfurt and then Lufthansa to Berlin proceeded without issue, but upon arrival in Berlin, her hockey bag was nowhere to be found. Airport staff informed her that the bag was still in Frankfurt. Despite numerous interactions with Lufthansa and Condor, spanning hundreds of phone calls and countless emails, Beemer received conflicting information and no concrete updates on the whereabouts of her luggage. Her frustration intensified as she navigated a new country without the comforts of home and struggled to replace essential items. In a recorded phone conversation with a Lufthansa representative, Beemer was told that her bag had been scanned at the Berlin airport on August 26th, despite the airport denying this. She received an email from Condor on October 9th stating that the tracing efforts were unsuccessful and Lufthansa would be responsible for reimbursing her for the lost baggage. While Lufthansa confirmed being in constant communication with Beemer and providing reimbursement according to her inventory list, Beemer asserts she was denied a refund for the excess baggage fees she paid. She received approximately 1,500 euros (roughly CAD$2,250) as compensation for the missing bag. Airlines are legally obligated to compensate travelers for lost or damaged luggage up to $2,780 and refund any associated baggage fees. Despite this, Beemer emphasizes that the financial compensation cannot replace the irreplaceable sentimental value of her belongings
