“I didn’t want to look back at this moment and say, I wish I had done something sooner,” says MayorOfLA. “Everything can be rebuilt—economies, jobs, business—but you can’t restore someone’s life once it’s been lost”
As officials put up makeshift hospitals in Central Park, on soccer fields in Washington, and at convention centers in New Jersey, and public health officials warn that the coronavirus could kill more than 100,000 Americans and infect millions more, mayors across the country are grappling with the fact that the gruesome death tolls and hospital shortages that some cities are already facing could soon be realities of their own.
You’re talking to all these mayors, to state and local officials. Do you think this should be a national decision, or do you think this should be county by county, as the administration floated earlier this week? I think the playbook is to throw aside partisanship and demand results. Praise it when it comes, like when the USScame into port. Don’t be afraid to say, “thank you, Mr. President and Mr. Vice President,” because they gave us that ship and that’s really important to save lives. And also don’t hold back when it’s someone from your own party who’s not doing the right thing. This requires us being honest with each other. Leadership is about honesty, and that seems to have evaporated.
When we talk about the economic devastation, I keep thinking about what happens after the short-term business loss and job loss that’s here and coming. The restaurant industry is shut down now. So are bars. Concerts and sporting events are shut down. Do those industries change forever, though? I can’t imagine packing into a concert hall, or into a bar, or eating dinner off of a table that hasn’t been sanitized.
