Los Angeles deputy charged with illegal possession of AR-15, tracer ammo at his home

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy is accused of illegally possessing an assault rifle and specialized bullets after authorities found them in a closet at his home, District Attorney George Gascón announced on Thursday, April 6.

Brandon Garmon, 45, was charged with felony counts of possessing the weapon and a destructive device. Authorities found the unregistered AR-15 assault rifle and tracer ammunition — a type of round built with a small pyrotechnic charge that burns as the bullet leaves the barrel — in Garmon’s home after serving him with a search warrant in April 2020.“It is illegal to possess an AR-15 assault rifle in California and I expect everyone, including sworn officers, to follow the law,” Gascón said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear if he was arrested, or posted bail, or what his status with the department is following the charges.
