Alberta now has the highest per capita coronavirus infection rate in the country. New infections here are nearly triple the rate in Ontario. But that is a number that requires a little perspective
April 23 was Alberta’s worst day of the pandemic. Our current infection rate is less than a third as bad as our rate in late April.Three months ago we would have been thrilled with our current numbers. On June 3, our best day since the pandemic began, we had just 17 new cases. So our trend is up, not down.Even in the last two weeks, our numbers have risen uncomfortably. On July 3 there were just 31 new cases, meaning daily new cases have risen three to fourfold over the past 18 days.
Still more perspective: It’s true Alberta’s rate of two cases per 100,000 population is highest in the country at the moment. Back at the peak of the meat-packing outbreaks, it was four times that — and back then we were far below Ontario or Quebec. Now compare that to American hotspots. In Texas, 15 per cent of tests are coming back positive. In Florida and Nevada it’s 19 per cent, and in Arizona 24 per cent.Article content continued
