Swimmers may even one day return to what\u0027s now one of the most polluted waterways in Vancouver.
The scientists gathering the data in a project called BioBlitz, led by principal investigator Matt Whalen of the Hakai Institute, have been pleasantly surprised by the life they’ve found underwater with their remote-operated vehicle, including an octopus, salmon, stickleback, Dungeness crabs, spiny dogfish sharks and schools of anchovy.“I think that is one half of the narrative that we kind of need to change a little bit,” Whalen said.
“It can be pretty, pretty nasty, like very filthy, muddy conditions on the bottom,” Whalen said. “And yet we captured some nice plankton and we saw an octopus in a glass bottle one day and that was very close to science world. So … the water is not pristine, but for an area that doesn’t receive a lot of exchange it’s hanging on, it’s amazing how resilient life can be.Bray said he’s not shocked to hear the water is richer than perhaps thought.
