Looking Ahead: The luxury SUVs we can't wait to see in 2020 via drivingdotca

Cars—who needs them? Apparently not consumers, who continue to turn their attention to the higher-riding comfort and all-weather security of crossovers and SUVs.At the high-end, luxury manufacturers are plumping up their lineups with classy and stylish SUVs now capable of sports car-like acceleration, while also adding technologies to improve fuel economy and reduce their carbon footprint.

The RS version, which will be available next summer as a 2021 model, is not about off-road bona fides, but sports car-like performance, starting with a 592-hp twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 – with a 48-volt belt/alternator/starter mild-hybrid system – the same engine as in the RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback.

Now, trying to show a more eco-conscious side, the company has brought out the five-seat Bentayga Hybrid, its first electrified vehicle. While the mid-sized concept, which was introduced at the 2017 New York auto show, showcased an advanced plug-in hydrogen fuel cell, it’s likely the production version will take its powertrain cues from the G80 sport coupe, which means the possibility of a 3.8L V6, a twin-turbocharged 3.3L V6 and a 5.0L V8 underhood. The GV80 is expected to target the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE-Class.

In combination, there’s 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and twin-speed transfer box, providing the low-range ratios required for towing or off-roading.
