The internationally known botanical garden and the Conservation Fun have entered into an agreement with Granogue Reserve LTD LLC to acquire the estate of Irénée du Pont, who died on Jan. 16. The more than 100-year-old estate is located off Smithbridge Road about seven miles from Longwood Gardens.Terms of the deal were not disclosed, the story said, adding that the acquisition was funded in part by the the Longwood Foundation and the Mt.
Paul Redman, president and CEO of Longwood Gardens, said it’s unclear how the buildings will be used and whether the property will ever be open to the public. Located in Kennett Square, Chester County, Longwood Gardens showcases more than 9,000 species and varieties of plants spread out across more than 1,000 acres of gardens and elaborate horticultural displays.
The institution was originally founded by Pierre du Pont in 1906 and has since become world-renowned for its dedication to botany, design, education and art.
