Health P.E.I. warns that Islanders with less severe illnesses may experience longer waits at emergency departments and hospitals due to increased patient volumes. Those with serious illnesses or injuries will be prioritized.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Health P.E.I. is advising Islanders with less severe illnesses could expect longer waits at the emergency departments and hospitals, which are currently over capacity due to increased patient volumes .

The agency said people experiencing serious illness or injury will be seen more quickly. They are advised to continue to seek emergency care and stay in the emergency department once triaged. The increased volumes also mean more patients are waiting in the emergency department for a hospital bed. Those who need less urgent care are advised to make an appointment with their primary care provider, visit a pharmacy for common ailments or refills, or go to a walk-in clinic.

Those without a primary care provider may consider register for the Health P.E.I.'s virtual care platform.
