Webb had not lost for 24 consecutive starts, a Giants record, but lasted only 3⅔ Tuesday night and took the loss.
QUEENS, New York — For the first time in 25 starts, dating back to last May, Logan Webb was saddled with the loss Tuesday, as the Giants failed to claim either game of their doubleheader with the New York Mets.
Manager Gabe Kapler came out with the surprise hook with two outs in the fourth inning, after Webb had allowed three runs the previous frame and runners on base in every inning. However, he had just recorded a double play before issuing his third walk of the night to Brandon Nimmo, which would prove to be his last hitter.
“On a day where he’s not his normal, effective self; on a day where he’s not feeling the baseball very well; and on a day where we have options to pick him up, like we did,” Kapler said, “we were going to do that.” Between the two games of the doubleheader, the Giants used every reliever on their roster except Tyler Beede, but nobody threw more than 1⅓ innings, potentially alleviating a possible bullpen crunch with another eight games over the next eight days.
