Tarbutt Township recently rejected the idea for its staff. But other area municipalities, including Sault Ste. Marie and Prince, are thinking it over
Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township are among a growing number of Ontario municipalities toying with the idea of a four-day work week for their staff.
"I think it is a good idea to investigate," adds Ward 2 Coun. Luke Dufour. "It is something that has been discussed internally before." "One of the most challenging decisions small communities are faced with is providing services for the residents based on available staffing levels, whether operations or customer service. And of course, based on sound fiscal responsibility of small communities."
At the Town of Bruce Mines, municipal administrator Judy Davis hasn't heard a lot of talk about a four-day work week."There has not been any talk of this in the office this year." "Recreation staff also condensed its work week to four days a week during the summer, both practices which will likely continue this year."
"Well, I had to laugh when considering how that might work in our municipality," Valerie Obarymskyj, clerk/treasurer in Hilton Township, told us."Here in Hilton Township it is mainly just myself in the administration department.""We do not think of that as a big inconvenience for our residents, especially following COVID. In fact, we currently close two days per week to provide uninterrupted time for the clerk to get more done.
In Johnson Township, clerk/CAO Janet Maguire says a four-day work week is not under consideration at this time. Rural governments, like businesses, began exploring the idea after the COVID-19 pandemic forced changes to the way municipal services were carried out, Vokey said. "One is just the logistics of a smaller workforce being more nimble and being like a laboratory where you can test things," Vokey said.
"As the pandemic started to wind down a little bit, we thought to give the compressed work week a trial period." "The whole atmosphere in the office is absolutely better," she said. "There's nothing better than having happy staff." "From an organizational perspective, it leads to higher employee satisfaction, retention and it's a recruiting advantage for a number of organizations that implement this," Trougakos said.
