Though Sheila Young doesn\u0027t know the identity of her liver donor, she knows they were at the Toronto hospital at the same time.

Young was suffering from advanced liver failure last spring when she went public with her campaign for a living donor. A campaign offers many advantages since it can speed the process of matching recipients to donors, and a shorter wait means the recipient will likely be stronger and healthier at the time of surgery. Bypassing the wait list also shortens the wait for others in need of transplants.

It was only when she arrived at the University Health Network hospital that she learned a transplant date had been set. The 12-hour surgery lasted throughout the night. Doctors take no more than 12 per cent of a donor’s liver to implant in the recipient, where it quickly regrows to full size. “The doctors told me to not even bother with the vaccinations because they won’t do anything for me,” she said.
