John and Sandra Shaar watch as family and friends began arriving at their Barrington Passage Jewelry store on Feb. 10 in larger than usual numbers. The surprise visit was to present the couple with a provincial certificate “In recognition of your dedication to your community” from the community. “Thank you for your years of supporting your community,” reads the certificate. Cake, balloons and flowers for Sandra completed the celebration. KATHY JOHNSON - Kathy JohnsonBARRINGTON PASSAGE, N.S.

“That’s the thing with Sandra and John. As soon as they learn of a need it's like they go all in. You don’t have to ask for their support. They come and ask you, 'Can we help?'” says Shelley d’Eon, founder of the Rosalin Nickerson CARE Fund. “They are set apart in the way they do things. They’ve always got the interest of others before theirs.”
