Monday began with Justice Juan Merchan ruling Trump had again violated his gag order. Then came testimony from current and former Trump employess.
Deborah Tarasoff, who works in the accounts payable department of the Trump Organization, described for the jury how the company paid its vendors in 2016 and 2017, and that she required documentation such as receipts before issuing checks. Tarasoff said checks above $2,500 had to be signed by former president Donald Trump or one of his sons, Eric or Donald Jr., and that limit rose to $10,000 in 2015.
Checks from Trump’s personal account, nine of which were sent to Michael Cohen, could only be signed by Trump himself. Even if an expense had been approved by Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg or another top official, Trump could still reject the payment. “If he didn’t want to sign it, he wouldn’t sign it and send it back,” Tarasoff said. “He would write void on it.
