This is Garland’s first congressional appearance since federal grand juries indicted former president Donald Trump — twice — and since he appointed a special counsel to handle the investigation and prosecution of President Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
Wednesday morning before the House Judiciary Committee, a session that is likely to be contentious as Republicans press the nation’s top law enforcement official on a host of politically charged cases. It is Garland’s first congressional appearance since federal grand juries indicted former president Donald Trump — twice — and since he appointed a special counsel to handle the investigation and prosecution of President Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
“A lot has been said about the Justice Department,” Garland said in his opening statement. “About who we are and what we are doing, about what our job is and what it is not, and about why we do this work. I want to provide some clarity.” Two days before Garland’s appearance, the committee asked him for a host of documents related to Hunter Biden. The panel also invited special counsel David Weiss and five other officials to sit for transcribed interviews next month.
