President Joe Biden will address the nation for the first time since the U.S. completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, effectively ending the nation's longest war.

In a statement released Monday, Biden said that he would use the address to provide additional insight on his criticized decision not to extend the U.S presence in Afghanistan further than Tuesday. He asserted that the decision was made following"the unanimous recommendation of the Joint Chiefs and of all of our commanders on the ground" to stick to the original August 31 deadline.

"Their view was that ending our military mission was the best way to protect the lives of our troops, and secure the prospects of civilian departures for those who want to leave Afghanistan in the weeks and months ahead," Biden said.
