Live updates: Arctic winter front freezes over North Texas for second day
. MedStar said its emergency crews responded to 27-weather related calls as of Friday morning, leading to at least 16 hospital transfers.
Standing on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of Jeffries Street in South Dallas, wearing only a button-down flannel, jeans and slippers, Moreno said he knew he was “no match for the wind,” yet was still struggling with what he has come to call the “give and take of homelessness.” Juliana Williams, director of development for OurCalling, a daytime outreach center for people experiencing homelessness, said she expects this kind of hesitation in the early days of winter weather, which is why in addition to organizing and offering resources, part of her job is to “reassure everyone in need they’re more than welcome to it.”
By 1:30 p.m., about two dozen people had already checked in. The shelter holds 360 beds, but contingency plans are already in place if demand exceeds their availability, according to Williams. ”We want to make sure we take care of basic needs, that everyone’s got clothes on their backs and food in their stomachs,” said Daniel Roby, the Austin Street Center’s chief executive officer.
Most of those outages were spread across Dallas and Parker counties, with Tarrant County largely spared, spokeswoman Kerri Dunn said. Crews were already working on repairing downed and damaged power lines.
