David Montgomery is set to return to the Detroit Lions' lineup for their Divisional Round playoff game after missing time due to an MCL injury. The Lions have remained competitive in his absence, and his return will bolster their already strong offense.
The Detroit Lions are welcoming back one of their top offensive players for their playoff journey while keeping the possibility open for their star defensive player to join them at some point during the postseason. David Montgomery is expected to be available for the Lions' Divisional Round game, according to Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who spoke to reporters on Tuesday.
The standout running back has been sidelined since Week 15 after reportedly tearing his MCL in their loss to the Buffalo Bills. While initial reports suggested Montgomery would require surgery that could have ended his season, he sought multiple opinions and decided against immediate surgery. There had been some hope that Montgomery might return for their Week 18 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, but he ultimately sat out the game. Montgomery has formed a highly effective running back duo with Jahmyr Gibbs. The veteran running back has rushed for 775 yards at 4.2 yards per carry, along with 36 receptions for 341 yards. His 12 rushing touchdowns ranked eighth among all running backs in the NFL this season. The Lions have managed well in Montgomery's absence, going 3-0 in the games he missed, scoring at least 31 points in each win. Gibbs also rushed for at least 100 yards in each game and scored four touchdowns in their victory over the Vikings on Sunday, which secured them the No. 1 seed in the NFC. As Montgomery's return draws near, Aidan Hutchinson's potential return remains uncertain. The star edge rusher has been out since Week 6 due to a broken fibula and tibia, but reports have repeatedly suggested Hutchinson could make a comeback if the Lions advance deep into the playoffs. Campbell didn't express any expectation that Hutchinson would return at any time during the playoffs on Tuesday. However, he also didn't dismiss the possibility. 'Look, I'm going to say it again: he has a season-ending injury,' Campbell stated
