Former Barcelona and Argentina teammates Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano are once again united, this time in a coaching and player capacity at Inter Miami.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano , former teammates at Barcelona and the Argentine national team, are once again on the same team, this time with Inter Miami . The club announced that Mascherano will be the new coach, replacing Gerardo “Tata” Martino who stepped aside for personal reasons. Mascherano, who most recently served as Argentina ’s under-20 team and Olympic coach, has signed a three-year contract.
He will take over the role after completing his work paperwork. The club’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, highlighted Mascherano’s vast experience in playing at the world’s biggest stages and coaching at the youth international level. Mascherano previously played alongside current Inter Miami players Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez, all of whom are expected to return for the 2025 season. Mascherano expressed his honor and privilege to lead Inter Miami and his eagerness to help the club reach new heights
