This year marks the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. We look back at one of the world’s worst maritime disasters

Inspired by the Greek gods, the RMS Titanic set sail to great fanfare on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, carrying with it the dreams of many for a better life in the New World.

In the dark days after the tragedy, the Nova Scotia capital became chief mourner, coroner and undertaker. “It gathered, identified and buried the bodies, and it did so with great diligence and respect,” British newspaper The Daily Telegraph said in 2012 during the 100-year memorial events. “The poignant tales of love and loss uncovered in the process ensure that the sinking is remembered, not just as a historic event, but as a human tragedy on a colossal scale.

The first of the recovery vessels, the Mackay-Bennett, eased into the harbour with its grim cargo on April 30, 1912, greeted by a mournful tolling of church bells and piers lined by hearses. In the days to follow, Halifax was transformed into a “city of funerals.”Article content The remaining 150 unclaimed victims were buried in three Halifax cemeteries between May 3 and June 12, making the city the largest Titanic gravesite in the world. Most of the Titanic gravestones are plain granite blocks bestowed by the White Star Line, but in some cases families, friends and Haligonians raised money to commission larger and more ornate personalized markers.Article content

A pair of child’s shoes, their brown leather scuffed but still sturdy looking, is one of the most poignant pieces in the collection, shaking the steeliest of hearts.
