Who will be the great left hope in Toronto’s mayoralty race now that Mike Layton has ruled himself out?

Party politics doesn’t always translate easily into the municipal arena where people are pulling together various groups, building a coalition that often includes people who are fighting at the provincial or federal levels.

Brad Bradford announced an advisory group for his campaign earlier this week that includes both Bob Lopinski and Kory Teneyke. Lopinski is a longtime Liberal operative and ran their war room for the last provincial election while Teneyke was campaign manager for the PC Party. The problem that Bradford will face as he attempts to position himself as the one to replace John Tory is that he will be competing for the same pool of voters as former councillor Ana Bailao.

Like Bradford, Bailao has announced she’s seriously considering a run. And, like Bradford, she also has a team of experienced campaign veterans behind her.Article contentThe reason no one is officially in the race at this point is because nominations don’t officially open until April 3. Right now, people can float their names, explore options and see if they can put together a team that can give them a viable path to victory.Anthony Furey on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.
