Try as they will, the federal Liberals can’t keep claiming to be the party of the Charter and the defenders of basic rights and freedoms, while also defending using the Emergencies Act to clear away a political protest. We claim to love freedom of speech, but then demand the government censor speech we don’t like. We claim to believe in religious freedom and conscience rights, but then demand governments dictate how people must act while ignoring their religious or conscience rights.I haven’t even mentioned how often Quebec has used the Notwithstanding Clause, or Section 33 of the Charter of rights and Freedoms as it is also known.
