Premiers will meet on Monday to discuss Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s health care offer, shortly after, they\u0027ll all accept it.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his health minister Sylvia Jones met with Trudeau’s Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos at Queen’s Park on Thursday. Ford called the meeting productive and said there are final details to work out but a deal will be signed.Advertisement 4LeBlanc and Duclos spoke of shared priorities for all citizens as they left the meeting.
Ford’s main issue is ensuring the federal government is a sustainable partner. Some of the pots of money that make up the overall offer to the premiers are currently only slotted for four or five years.In the case of the money to increase the pay of personal support workers, Ford, along with other premiers, wants to make sure the federal government is an ongoing partner. It’s the same stance he took in negotiating a child care deal with Trudeau and it’s likely to work.
As for the issue of public versus private care, despite competing statements, there’s no spat between Ford and Trudeau on that front. Trudeau has been under pressure to tell Ford he can’t pay private surgical clinics to perform operations like cataracts or knee and hip replacement.Article content “No, that conversation never came up,” Ford said Tuesday when asked if Trudeau had told premiers that public money couldn’t be spent on surgeries in private clinics.“The very first thing I brought up in the meeting was the fact that defending the Canada Health Act, upholding the Canada Health Act, and the principles within, is an absolute non-negotiable priority of this government,” Trudeau said.
One source at the meeting said Trudeau made it clear to the premiers that he isn’t interested in having the federal government run provincial health systems.
