Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss, debate, perhaps amend and possibly pass Tory’s budget. Part of the reason he has stayed on as mayor and not formally tendered his resignation is that the budget, in part, was crafted using the strong mayor powers granted to Toronto and Ottawa this past fall.Article content
Still, some on council believe that given the strong mayor powers and Tory’s announcement that he will resign, the budget is illegitimate and should be scrapped.“Mayor John Tory will be attending Wednesday’s budget meeting to ensure the 2023 City of Toronto operating and capital budgets are finalized. The budget makes key investments in housing, transit, and community safety and the mayor will be working to ensure it is approved,” Tory’s office said in a statement on Monday.
Tory has been getting pressure from all sides – those who want him gone and those who want him to stay. A Forum Research poll on whether Tory should stay or go showed 45% felt he should stay, while 43% said he should leave.Article content
