PM once again lays blame at everyone\u0027s feet but his own in Nazi goof up on Parliament Hill.
The Trudeau government didn’t offer up meetings with Zelenskyy to the opposition leaders, a standard protocol for visiting dignitaries. They didn’t make the visit non-partisan, it was more about bolstering Justin Trudeau’s image than Zelenskyy’s and then things went sideways.
When Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre asked whether Trudeau and the many government agencies at his disposal had vetted the invited guests, Trudeau acted as if Poilievre was attacking the ancient rights of parliamentarians..Those of us who have been around Parliament Hill for longer than a cup of coffee will know there are times when the government of the day does vet visitors when a foreign head of state is visiting.
It doesn’t happen all the time, but more than once during my time on the Hill, did I have to submit to extra screening even though my office was in Centre Block, on the same floor as the prime minister. With a visiting head of state from a war-torn country, this would be expected, but Trudeau — looking to make sure all blame stays with now former speaker Anthony Rota — made it sound like Poilievre’s suggestion was an attack on Parliament.
That is a ridiculous assertion; the reality is this visit, this address, was rushed from the start and Trudeau’s team dropped the ball. No one who has worked in previous PMOs, under any PM or under either party, realistically thinks this played out the way it should have.
