A shooting death, a lack of response to community concerns, an organization out of control, the Ford government needs to act.
These so-called harm reduction sites get their approval to operate from the federal government, the push to allow them often comes from municipal governments as was the case in Toronto and the funding comes from the province. Yet, at their core, these are independent facilities with their own board and management.
“Community Health Centres are independently operated, and under the purview of the Ontario government,” was the response to questions put to Toronto Public Health. “South Riverdale Community Health Centre has an executive director who reports to a board of directors and is accountable to the Ministry of Health.”Article contentIf that’s the case, it’s up to the Ontario Ministry of Health to either shut this site down or take it over and install some adult supervision. Provincial regulations require that consumption and treatment sites offer their clients “onsite or defined pathways to addictions treatment services.
That’s not the philosophy of the people who run the SRCHC, which proudly states on their website that their philosophy around harm reduction is different. That alone should be enough to have the centre’s licence pulled. If the province doesn’t think that shutting down the safe injection and safe supply programs of the SRCHC is the right thing to do then they need to take action that sends a message to the neigbouring community and other such centres. They need to fire the board and the senior management immediately and install people who are responsible not only for what happens inside the four walls of the centre but once clients leave. We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
