Rideau Hall confirmed that Governor General Mary Simon was not the occupant, but that was as close as anyone got to an answer. Trudeau refused to answer the question when it was put to him in the House of Commons, while his office denied media questions on the matter via email. In the days after the story broke, officials at Global Affairs drafted several different responses to try to justify the expense, including that they followed all the rules.
“For everyone’s awareness, oMINA has asked that we close without a response,” Jason Kung, a spokesperson at Global Affairs said in an email to colleagues. The term “oMINA” is a reference to the minister’s office. “I assume you’ve seen the recent Toronto Sun article on the hotel costing,” wrote Davon Singh, Director of the Executive Office & Head of Visits at Canada’s High Commission in London.
“I think we should keep our current numbers for the PM delegation,” Huot-Bolduc responded while asking for greater clarity on how long the ceremonies would be.Still no word from Trudeau's PMO on who stayed in $6,000-a-night hotel room
