Bonnie Crombie is still the front runner for the Ontario Liberal leadership but there are signs she may have trouble finishing first.
Since entering the race, Crombie has received no end of accolades, while being described as the one to beat and Premier Doug Ford’s biggest nightmare. There’s no doubt that she would be a formidable foe to Ford if she were to become Liberal leader.
If a riding has 100 members voting and a candidate takes 80 of those votes, then that candidate gets 80 points. If just 10 people vote in that riding and the candidate takes eight of those votes, they still get 80 points. To win, Crombie either needs to win on the first ballot or come very close. Speaking to those who have run leadership races under this type of system, they generally find it difficult for the frontrunner to gain extra support after the first ballot.
