The Trudeau government says it is ready to begin evacuating Canadians from an Israel at war by the end of the week. The Conservative opposition say the help should be arriving already, and that bad planning is putting Canadians at risk.It’s hard to argue with the Conservative’s position given that Mexico has already conducted two evacuation flights, bringing 276 of their citizens home already, while Canada is still planning.
The requirement for a government response was driven by the cancellation of many commercial flights. Melissa Lantsman, deputy leader of the Conservative Party, said the government hasn’t learned from the reports into Canada’s botched evacuation of Afghanistan.She said the government should have ordered military planes into the area as soon as the scale of the war was realized on Saturday. That would have allowed the planes to be on standby for the moment it was safe to land and evacuate Canadians.
“I spoke to a young woman from Montreal, crying, because she’s terrified and is unable to get any information from the Embassy or Ottawa. Same with her mother in Montreal, who has also reached out to me. All I have is a cellphone. People desperately need to speak with a human being who is calm, able to reassure, and provide information. Any information,” Bercovici wrote.
