The director of Lightyear explains the connection to Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear animated spinoff show. 'If anything, that's a metaphor for the way we viewed that, that's a separate thing, there's a wall of a TV between them.'
Lightyear director Angus MacLane explains how Toy Story's Buzz TV show spinoff connects to the upcoming origin story movie. Tim Allen brought the iconic Space Ranger toy to life in Pixar's groundbreaking 1995 movie, in which the character grappled with the realization he isn't a space-faring adventurer, but instead the a toy now owned by Andy. Allen would carry the role through three sequels and a handful of Toy Story shorts and 2001's kart racing game Toy Story Racer.
Chris Evans is taking up the mantle of Buzz for Lightyear, which acts as an origin story for the character the toy is based on and explores his adventures as a Space Ranger for Star Command trying to get his people home after being marooned on an alien planet while also contending with the villainous Emperor Zurg. Alongside Evans, the cast for the film includes Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
"Well, that show was developed when we were doing Toy Story 2, and I always imagined that it was like the Ewoks or the Droids to the Star Wars universe. I feel like when they were making Return of the Jedi, they weren't thinking about Droids and they weren't thinking about Ewoks, so that's about as much as I thought about it. [As in] not at all, because in my mind, that hasn't gotten produced [yet].
Long before Lightyear would begin development at Pixar, Disney sought to capitalize on Toy Story's success and branch out to the world of television with Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, beginning with a direct-to-video movie that worked as the in-universe inspiration for Tim Allen's hero. After initially being replaced by Patrick Warburton for the film, Allen would return for the movie before Warburton would carry the role on into the TV series of the same name.
Though not explicitly calling Lightyear a soft reboot of the character, MacLane does seem to indicate the Toy Story spinoff could potentially be retconning Buzz's TV show. That being said, the director does note that he views the in-universe series as not having been produced yet, seemingly establishing Lightyear as having come out within the Toy Story timeline sometime before the events of the original film and, therefore, the previous Buzz spinoffs.
