Australian circus/dance company Circa re\u002Dimagines the Stravinsky classic

According to Yaron Lifschitz, he had been wanting to do a circus-setting version of The Rite of Spring forever. The artistic director of Australian circus/dance company Circa soon found out.

The original performance is said — reports vary — to have caused a minor scandal when it debuted in Paris in 1913. Over the decades, it has received several interpretations, including choreographer Pina Bausch’s 1975 take that emphasized the misogyny of the original story.“In the 35 minutes of The Rite of Spring, the Stravinsky part of the show, I think there are about 80 separate pieces of action. And there were a couple of different versions.

“I said I don’t know, that I had thought about starting in silence. And he said, ‘I think that’s a terrible idea. I’ll write you something.’” Founded in Brisbane in 2004, Circa has performed in Vancouver several times, most recently in 2018 with Opus. That show featured the troupe performing to Shostakovich played by France’s Debussy String Quartet.
