Mitchell “The Moose” Hooper, a former University of Guelph football player, turned marathon runner, turned strongman, is the first Canadian ever to win the title of World’s Strongest Man
Hooper says his first passion in sports was golf. In high school, he almost moved to Florida to train under Sean Foley, the former coach of Tiger Woods, but he was too nervous to leave his hometown of Midhurst, Ont., behind. He then turned his focus to football, playing at the University of Guelph while earning a human kinetics degree.
“All of that was part of the same mission to relate to people, and to be able to be a better practitioner,” he says. “My ceiling in strength sports has just, coincidentally, taken me to the top of the world.” He admits, however, he is gifted in other ways, in how his tendons attach to his bones, in the size of his joints, in his natural neural drive.Article content
“Staving those off is one of the keys to success,” he says. “No matter how an event has gone, you just have to wipe the slate clean and move on to the next event. You can never really rest on your laurels.”
