The NSW Liberals ran male candidates in seats where a majority of voters are women. Was it surprising that female teals prevailed?

The NSW Liberals will run female candidates for the first time in the federal seats of Wentworth and North Sydney as the party tries to wrest both back from teal independents and convince voters it has made ground in fixing its so-called women problem.

The Liberals ran males in both seats at the last federal election and lost to female teal candidates. Knox was the only candidate to formally nominate for Wentworth ahead of next year’s federal poll, although Liberal Party insiders who cannot comment on preselections publicly said other candidates had initially expressed interest.

Knox said Wentworth was a “federation seat” that deserved a seat at a cabinet table, which an independent such as Spender could never provide. “I believe the Liberal Party should preselect a woman and my withdrawal can pave the way,” he said at the time. In the end, Sharma was preselected.
